From Bungonia’s striking landscapes to the quiet charm of Tallong, Windellama, Towrang and Lake Bathurst, these smaller communities prove that sometimes the best discoveries happen when you take the turn-off instead of staying on the highway.
There are plenty of stories scattered across Bungonia, Lake Bathurst, Tallong, Towrang and Windellama. European exploration and settlement came to the area in the early 1800s, followed by farming, new roads and small communities taking shape across the countryside.
Bungonia once had plans to become a major centre, while Lake Bathurst and Tallong still carry reminders of their early settlement. At Towrang, convict labour helped build the Great South Road, leaving behind bridges, culverts, graves and other traces of this difficult chapter in the region’s past.
Windellama has a long Aboriginal history, followed by stories of European settlement, gold and bushrangers. Together, these villages tell a much bigger story of the people and places that shaped the region.
