Goulburn has a way of surprising people. Beneath the heritage facades and country charm is a vibrant regional city filled with local characters, unexpected discoveries and plenty of reasons to stay awhile.
There’s a lot of history tucked into Goulburn’s streets. The region has been home to Aboriginal people for at least 21,000 years, with a rich and enduring Indigenous heritage.
European exploration began in 1818, with Goulburn established as a township in 1834. In 1863, it was proclaimed Australia’s first inland city, setting the scene for a period of growth shaped by wool, the railway, grand cathedrals and even a brief brush with the gold rush.
Look around today and much of that story is still here, woven through the city’s buildings, streets and landmarks.
