Tarago

A country town with stories to tell

Surrounded by grazing country and with the railway running through its heart, Tarago is a small village with a character all its own. Stop by the loaded dog, take in the wide-open countryside and spend a little time getting to know this quieter corner of the Goulburn region.

A little history

There are plenty of stories tucked into this small village. The Loaded Dog Hotel has been welcoming travellers since 1848, and its early days even crossed paths with bushrangers Frank Gardiner and Ben Hall.

Tarago later became an important stop along the railway, with its station opening in 1884. More than a century on, trains still stop here and the village continues its long tradition of welcoming people on their way through.
